Ron McDole enrolled in Southeast Guitar Repair Academy because of his love for guitars and the opportunity to learn a new trade through a grant from Ohio University. In this student spotlight, Ron shares how he developed professional repair skills, started a legitimate business, and created a plan for earning income during retirement.

What were you doing professionally before enrolling?

I was working in auto body repair.

What made you decide to enroll in guitar repair training?

My love for guitars and a grant from Ohio University.

What concerns or fears did you have before getting started?

Could I learn a new trade in my 60s? Would I be able to get customers?

What almost stopped you from enrolling?

The cost.

What was your biggest breakthrough during the course?

Learning full setups and fretwork.

I also learned how to start a legitimate business, including setting up bank accounts, forming an LLC, and obtaining a state tax ID.

Have you earned money from guitar repair work since enrolling?

Yes.

Tell us about the guitar repair work you have done.

I am still working my day job, but I have refurbished and sold a few guitars for a profit. I have also completed repair work for several fellow musicians.

Most of the profit I earned last year was invested back into tools and supplies.

Have you started a guitar repair business?

Yes.

How has learning guitar repair changed your life?

I now have a retirement plan for income.

What would you say to someone who is considering enrolling but feels uncertain?

Buy some guitars from yard sales and do any refurbishing you can to see whether it keeps your interest.
